Luke Deer researches alternative finance in China and the Asia-Pacific. He is the Research Director for the first Asia-Pacific and China Alternative Finance Benchmarking Research Reports, led by the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, with Tsinghua University and the University of Sydney Business School. Luke has researched peer-to-peer lending and informal finance in China and lived in Shanghai for two years between 2012 and 2014. Luke is currently a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the Department of Political Economy at the University of Sydney and a Research Associate with the University of Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance and the Cambridge Judge School of Business. His post-doctoral research is funded by a 2015 grant from the Institute of New Economic Thinking for a project with Mike Beggs, Chris Jefferis and Yu Yuxin that aims to develop a ‘money view’ of the dynamics between financial innovation and central banking in the recent evolution of China’s financial system.
